The Higurashi anime series is based on a visual novel created by Ryukishi07 and the doujin circle 07th Expansion. Studio DEEN animated the first anime adaptation, which debuted in 2006 as When They Cry: Higurashi. When They Cry: Kai (Season 2) followed in 2007. The initial story was concluded with a five-episode When They Cry: Rei OVA in 2009. The franchise also has multiple OVAs, omake episodes, and specials.
The Higurashi anime series returned to TV screens in 2020 with Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou, animated by studio Passione. Gou was followed by a second, titled Sotsu. The story is set after the events of Studio DEEN's adaptation and is considered a sequel.
Now defunct Funimation licensed the original Higurashi anime and describes the plot as:

But something about this isolated town seems “off,” and his feelings of dread continue to grow. With a gnawing fear that he’s right, what dark secrets could this small community be hiding?
