Interview: NIKIIE and Dorohedoro's Chaotic Music
Anime Atelier interviewed singer and songwriter NIKIE and chatted about her work on the Dorohedoro anime. NIKIIE, as part of the (K)NoW_NAME unit, performed and wrote the lyrics for the ending theme song "Return to Head" for the anime's second season.
NIKIIE' has been a member of (K)NoW_NAME since 2015 and, over the years, has worked on numerous anime titles. Her voice has marked Dorohedoro's music world since the first season, alongside Ayaka Tachibana. The talented artist shared her love for the chaotic world and answered all of our questions related to the adaptation.
Q: The anime adaptation of Dorohedoro is one of the works for which (K)NoW_NAME has composed all of the music. How do you feel about returning to this project?
NIKIIE: I’m incredibly happy that (K)NoW_NAME has been given the opportunity to handle the music for Season 2 as well!

Q: How long did it take from the moment you learned a sequel to Dorohedoro was in the works, to when you finished producing the ending theme?
NIKIIE: Actually, there wasn’t much time between when I was told I’d be writing the lyrics and singing the sequel’s ending theme and the deadline. I think I finished everything, including recording the vocals, in about a week’s time. I wrote the song in a few days, went through repeated discussions with the producer to align on the worldview, and recorded the vocals within a week; really a turbulent schedule. It was tough, but I was able to sing and record while being fully immersed in the world of Dorohedoro.

『ドロヘドロ』の続編制作が決まったと知ってから、エンディングテーマの制作を終えるまでにどれくらいの時間がかかりましたか？
実は続編EDテーマ曲の作詞・歌唱を担当する事を知らされてから締切まであまり猶予がなく、1週間程度で歌のレコーディングまで終わっていたと思います。数日で作詞を仕上げ、プロデューサーと世界観の擦り合わせを繰り返し、1週間後には歌のレコーディングをするという怒涛のスケジュールでした。大変でしたが、どっぷりドロヘドロの世界に浸るような没入感の中で歌入れまでできました。
Q: The lyrics of “Return to Head” are scattered with baseball metaphors that feel so quintessentially Dorohedoro, resulting in a wonderfully chaotic piece. Could you tell us about how you wrote the lyrics, whether there was any input from the producers or the staff, and whether there's any meaning to be found in them?
NIKIIE: Exactly! Weaving in baseball terminology to connect words that normally wouldn't go together, creating that kind of chaotic lyrical world; that was exactly the request I was given. I crafted them with the intention of capturing a worldview that’s different from the norm, almost like a reversal of values, much like the demons that appear in Dorohedoro. Of course, the vision for how it would come together with the visuals wasn't something I could complete on my own, so I kept making detailed revisions with the producer right up until the recording day.
I pushed it all the way to completion, using words and sounds in tricky ways so they don't even sound like Japanese, swapping the written form over to English, and so on. A lightheadedness that lets you power through even the lowest, worst situations on a rush of exhilaration; I'd be happy if that's the feeling people come away with when listening to the song.

「Returnトゥ頭」の歌詞は、まさに『ドロヘドロ』らしい野球の比喩が散りばめられ、非常にカオスな仕上がりになっています。歌詞について、どのように書いたのか、プロデューサーやスタッフからの意見はあったのか、また歌詞に何か意味を見出すことはできるのか、教えていただけますか？
そうなんです！野球用語を織り交ぜながら、普通なら繋がらないような言葉たちが繋がっていく、まさにそんなカオスな歌詞世界がオーダーでした。ドロヘドロに登場する悪魔たちのように普通とは違う世界観、価値観のひっくり返りみたいなものを意識して仕上げました。もちろん映像と組み合わせた時のイメージは自分の中だけで完結できる話ではないので、プロデューサーと細かくレコーディングの日まで手直しを繰り返していきました。日本語に聞こえないような言葉や響きをトリッキーに使いながら、表記は英語に置き換えたり…など完全体になるまでやりきりました。最低で最悪な状況も高揚感で乗り切ってしまう軽快さ、そんなメッセージを受け取ってもらえるとうれしいです。
Q: Compared to the Season 1 ending theme, “Return To Head” feels like a calmer, slower-tempo song. Is it tied to a specific development in the story?
NIKIIE: During the songwriting stage, I was asked to do so imagining a female demon singing the song on a club stage, and I think that same vision was conveyed to composer R·O·N as well. I think it turned out as a club-style track with a driving four-on-the-floor beat, the kind of song the demons on the cover art are jumping to and grooving along. I kept in mind the role an ending theme needs to fill, designing it so it doesn't hinge on any one particular storyline.

作詞の段階でもクラブでステージで女性の悪魔が歌っているようなイメージで、とのオーダーがあったので作曲のR・O・Nさんにもそのように伝わっていたと思うのですが、ジャケットの悪魔たちがジャンプしてノリノリで踊っている四つ打ちの効いたクラブサウンドに仕上がっていると思います。何か特定のストーリーに依存させない形でED
曲として求められる役割を意識しました。
Q: What were your impressions when you first saw the animated footage? Is there a scene in particular that you like?
NIKIIE: I was really moved when I saw the song combined with the ending animation. I love how Chidarma is “playing dead” the whole time, and at the end he just gets up and stretches as if he’s saying: “Ah, I slept so well~.” I also love how everyone seems so used to his pranks that they just ignore him; that’s very cute too.
Basically, I love everything about it! (laughs)

エンディングの映像と合わさったのを観た時は本当に感動しました。チダルマの死んだふり？から最後「良く寝た〜」的な伸びをするまでの流れが愛おしく好きです。みんなイタズラ慣れしてるのか、無視してるところも可愛くて好きです。要するに全部好きです！笑
Q: Are songs with such chaotic lyrics difficult to perform live?
NIKIIE: I think I just have to trust my muscle memory (laughs).

Q: Do you think you’ll incorporate this wordplay-heavy approach into projects beyond Dorohedoro as well?
NIKIIE: There aren’t many songs that let me play with words this freely, so encountering Dorohedoro and working on its music completely turned my sense of values upside down, in a good way. It positively influenced even my solo work (as NIKIIE), leading me to incorporate more wordplay in there too.

言葉遊びをこんなに存分にさせていただける楽曲はあまりないので、ドロヘドロに出会って、ドロヘドロの楽曲の制作を経て、良い意味で価値観が180度ひっくり返りました。ソロ(nikiie)の作品も言葉遊びするようになり、良い影響がありました。
Q: You’re very flexible when it comes to genres, effortlessly switching between styles ranging from rap to heavy rock. Are there any styles you’d like to explore more in the future?
NIKIIE: Thank you so much; it makes me really happy hearing that! I’d love to try my hand at jazz and R&B too in the future.

Q: Do you have any favorite songs or tracks from Dorohedoro?
NIKIIE: “Return To Head” is one of them, of course, but when I first heard the opening theme, “Zettai Must Danmen,” I was like, “What is this?! It’s so cool!!” and listened to it over and over. I especially love the guitar in the first verse… it gives me chills. I even thought, “I want to sing that too!” (laughs)

Q: Next, I’d like to ask about the ending themes for Season 1. They were closely tied to the story’s development, weren’t they? I believe you wrote the lyrics for some of them. Did you receive specific instructions, or did you immerse yourself in the manga and episodes to find the most interesting approach to writing the music?
NIKIIE: : Since the ending theme for Season 1 was set to change every two episodes, I was certainly mindful of the story, but I was asked not to focus on any specific characters. So, I read the manga to fully grasp the content before writing the songs.

Q: Which of (K)NoW_NAME’s songs for Dorohedoro is your personal favorite? And why?
NIKIIE: Right now my favorite is “Return to Head”, though I know I'm tooting my own horn saying that! It makes me feel like I can get through even the most chaotic times with a positive and upbeat attitude.

Q: Do you have a favorite character in Dorohedoro? In a past interview, you mentioned you liked Shin.
NIKIIE: I know it’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but I really like Shin-senpai…! His personality and demeanor are just so cool; I’m a huge fan.

NIKIIE: Of course, I think you can enjoy it, but since this music was born specifically from the Dorohedoro series, if you find yourself thinking: “I love this song!”, I’d be overjoyed if you’d also check out the show itself!

Q: Considering that more than five years had passed, was it difficult to switch back to the distinctive sound of Dorohedoro?
NIKIIE: Not at all! The mental and creative resources I use for Dorohedoro are always fresh and ready in my mind!

Q: What is the typical workflow for (K)NoW_NAME’s music projects?
NIKIIE: After we vocalists are informed about the project we’re joining, we don't actually get started until the song demo (an almost-complete version that just needs the vocals added) is finished. If lyrics need to be written, we write them from there, record a temporary guide vocal, and then head into the recording session. It’s a workflow where everyone focuses on doing their best in their respective roles, so our concentration doesn’t get scattered. I don’t think there’s a better environment for an artist than this.

(K)NoW_NAMEの音楽プロジェクトの一般的なワークフローはどのようなものですか？
私たちボーカリストは参加作品を知らされた後、実際に動き出すのは楽曲のデモ(もうあとは歌を入れるだけのほぼ完成系)が仕上がったタイミングです。作詞する必要がある場合はそこから作詞をして仮歌を入れ、レコーディング当日を迎えるという感じです。各々が持ち場で最高の仕事をするぞ！というワークフローなので、集中力が分散しません。アーティストとしてこんな最高の環境はないと思います。
Q: Is there anyone you feel you have the best chemistry with and find easiest to work with? And is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with more often?
NIKIIE: Makoto Miyazaki-san, whom I’m collaborating with on SPY×FAMILY, is the musician I respect the most.
I’m always moved by his approach to the projects, his flexibility, knowledge, curiosity, love for music, and demeanor. I’m always thinking: “I want to work with him more so I can learn from him!!!” (laughs)

NIKIIE: Of course! I love all the projects I’ve been a part of, so I can’t pick just one.
