The anime adapts The Summer Hikaru Died (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu) manga by Mokumokuren, serialized in Kadokawa's Young Ace Up magazine. Yen Press licensed the manga in English.
The story follows Yoshiki and Hikaru, childhood friends. One day, Hikaru disappears on a mountain, but returns a week later. However, the thing that returned is not Yoshiki's friend in spite of having his face, his voice, and his looks. Then, mysterious things start happening in the village, and the natural order of things is disturbed as Yoshiki slowly realizes his friend is not who he seems to be.
