Sword Art Online Announces Echoes of Aincrad Game and Anime Special
The Sword Art Online franchise is getting a new game, Echoes of Aincrad, slated for release on July 10, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
The players of the upcoming RPG will be able to create their own character and explore a world, while doing quests and solving the mystery of Aincrad. Game Studio Inc. is developing the game, that will introduce Iori (voiced by Kana Ichinose), and focus on the first two floors of Aincrad.
Echoes of Aincrad: Unanswered//butterfly
In addition, the series is also getting a 110-minute anime special, titled Unanswered//butterfly, which will expand on the world and introduce new characters, but also mark the return of some familiar faces.
As of now, the cast includes:
- Tomoyo Kurosawa as Ermine
- Koki Uchiyama as Rex
- Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito
- Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna

Players who purchase the Echoes of Aincrad Premium Edition or the Echoes of Aincrad Premium Edition Dengeki Special Pack will be eligible to apply to attend a special screening of the Unanswered//butterfly on May 9, 2026. The special will be screened at a later time.
Sword Art Online is a light novel series by Reki Kawahara that started in 2009. It spawned multiple TV anime adaptations, movies, manga, light novels, and games. The franchise announced a new anime movie project in 2022, but it is unclear if this announcement is related to that.
