New Sugar Sugar Rune Anime Project Announced
A new anime adaptation of Moyoco Anno's Sugar Sugar Rune manga was just announced at the Studio Khara panel at Japan Expo 2025 in Paris. The new project was announced alongside a short animated film that tells a prequel story to the original manga and commemorates 20th anniversary of the serialization. The short film, titled SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières, is now available on khara's official channel:
The anime was directed by Yusuke Matsui (Evangelion 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time and Shin Kamen Rider). Studio Khara recently produced the Rebuild of Evangelion film trilogy, along with Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
Sugar Sugar Rune received an anime adaptation from Studio Pierrot in 2005, directed by Yukihiro Matsushita.
Sugar Sugar Rune is a magical girl series written and illustrated by Moyoco Anno, and originally serialized in the Nakayoshi magazine from 2003 to 2007. The series was compiled into 8 volumes, with publisher Del Rey originally acquiring the English rights. Those rights were subsequently taken over by Udon Entertainment in 2015, but to date, no reprinted volumes are available.
