Review: Firefly Wedding Episode 1
As someone who has always loved dark romance anime, I was especially excited when the Firefly Wedding anime was announced. This is a love story with dark twists: it follows the suspenseful journey of a terminally ill woman after a mysterious assassin unexpectedly comes into her life.
While navigating new challenges and living in close proximity with this man, the female protagonist constantly wonders– will he be her murderer or her savior? We will just have to wait and see.
How the Dark Romance Begins
Firefly Wedding Episode 1 introduces us right away to our protagonist, Satoko Kirigaya. She is troubled by a heart condition and not knowing how long she has left to live, spending every day like it could be her last.
She tries not to overexert herself, but there are a few things that test her patience. For instance, Satoko Kirigaya's loving father wants the best for her and looks for her potential husband. As a nobleman's daughter, Satoko Kirigaya has always thought her role in life was to please her parents. That's why, despite her condition, she is determined to make her father proud.
As the episode continues, Satoko Kirigaya decides to walk to town despite her father's wishes to keep her as safe as possible. As she looks around at some of the items in the shop, she suddenly gets kidnapped and is held captive by a dangerous group. In a series of events, a ruthless assassin named Shinpei arrives and kidnaps her again, and Satoko Kirigaya is caught in a desperate situation between life and death once more. However, she comes up with an offer the assassin cannot refuse.
Why this Twisted Historical Romance Anime Is a Must-Watch
As a reader of the original manga series by Oreco Tachibana, I actually had an idea of what this dark story entailed. I would describe the manga as a creative, beautifully made, and gripping tale between a frail nobleman's daughter and her potential killer. I found the art very unique, from each individual character to the background scenes.
I was excited for this going into the anime by Studio David Production, and after watching the first episode, it was very nice to see the beautiful colors and details come to life. I also liked how the anime's story has a perfectly balanced blend of historical, romance, and action. The art direction manages to capture the twisted charm of the original manga while also putting out its own identity as an anime. For example, the character design and scenery are something I think everyone would enjoy and appreciate.
One of the aspects of the Firefly Wedding premiere that I enjoyed the most was the characters. Dark stories tend to have complicated characterizations, and we got to see that in the assassin Shinpei straight away. His mindset veers from what some consider the norm, especially with his illogical ideas and decisions. And even though he takes on the role of an assassin, his lack of real-life and social experiences is what fails him in several moments in the episode. The adaptation from manga to anime was very similar and interesting to watch, so I'm overall excited for how it will be developed and executed in the future.
Overall, Firefly Wedding Episode 1 delivered an experience that kept me on the edge of my seat. Kirigaya and Shinpei, the characters in opposite situations, hooked me in and kept me interested to see beyond the first episode. I'm excited to continue watching more of it, how they will develop, who else will come along, where the story will go, and how the romance will blossom.
As a manga reader, I loved that the adaptation had its own unique moments. The pace was a bit quicker than I thought, but it was still easy to follow and enjoy. Don't miss out on the Firefly Wedding anime this season, with its mixture of action, romance, compelling characters, and a dark storyline.
