Michael McFarland, the American ADR director, script writer, and English dub voice actor for numerous high-profile series, has been hospitalized in his ongoing battle with a brain tumor, now revealed to be a glioblastoma.

GoFundMe has been created to aid McFarland's recovery, including hiring a live-in medical assistant, since private insurance covers only a few days of care. The fundraiser aims to raise US$200,000 and has already reached over 90% of its goal.

Glioblastoma is a fast-growing, aggressive tumor that can occur in the brain or spinal cord. Untreated, it has a six-month life expectancy. According to his family and supporters, McFarland's surgeries have gone well, and he remains in high spirits.

McFarland was first hospitalized in January 2025 for what was assumed to be an ear infection; this turned out to be a brain tumor, for which he underwent emergency surgery. Secondary surgery took place in late April, with an update on GoFundMe suggesting it would be a "more difficult recovery."

Various voice actors have pulled together to support McFarland, including the original 4Kids cast of Pokémon, who are hosting a raffle with a signed comic as the main prize.

Michael McFarland's career spans multiple decades, beginning in 1997 with his role as Master Roshi for Dragon Ball Z. He's also starred as Jean Havoc in Fullmetal Alchemist (both the original 2003 anime and the Brotherhood remake), Buggy the Clown in One Piece, Ritsu Soma in both versions of Fruits Basket, and Jean Kirstein in Attack on Titan.

A prolific figure in the English dub industry, McFarland has served as the ADR director for several notable series, including Dragon Ball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, and Arifureta.
